To tie-in with Icarus' tour of Journey's End, the Education Team have created five workshops to compliment students understanding of the play, suitable for all pupils of secondary school age.
WW1 Life and Times
This workshop gives students an essential insight into how important context is in creating drama. Through
exploring practically the social and political context of WWI, students will develop their knowledge and
understanding of the period and the stimulus behind plays such as Journey’s End.
Trench Warfare
A dynamic and interactive workshop which allows students to experience and explore through practical exercises the
everyday life of a WWI soldier. Through creating their own trench, and working within the constraints of that, they
will gain an enhanced understanding of both the experience of a WWI soldier and of Journey’s End as a whole.
Performing History
How does an actor approach a part set in a particular period? With specific reference to RC Sheriff’s Journey’s End
and the British Servicemen of WWI, we examine the journey an actor takes to prepare for a part, using modern and
contemporary resources and rehearsal techniques to produce a short performance at the end of the session.
Conflict on Stage
It has been suggested that for a good story to occur there must be an element of conflict – whether this is in action,
character aims and objectives or the story itself. With particular reference to RC Sherriff’s Journey’s End pupils will,
using drama games and text-based work, examine how moments of conflict make for compelling theatre and how
conflict and resolution affects an audience.
Naturalism and Real Time
How can one create a ‘naturalistic’ atmosphere on stage and what are the effects and complications of performing a
story in real time? With reference to RC Sheriff’s Journey’s End the group will examine the challenges of performing
specific tasks live on stage, and investigate performance techniques designed to create a tangible atmosphere and
Each workshop lasts 90 minutes and will be led by an experienced workshop leader and a member of the Othello cast, subject to the actors' performance schedule.
One workshop: £350. Two workshops: £500. Discounts available with bookings for the production.
